Rest anyone?

Hey friends,
So it's become obvious... transitioning into a new
job tends to take up lots of time (as evidenced by my lack of blogging). Still, the time I had to rest over the last few months is now gone. As a piece of my new role I've been tasked with this question..."What does rest look like to you?" I assume the thought behind the question is how to encourage appropriate time away from my job. I was asked this question several weeks ago, and have pondered it off and on since then. I've been surprised by my thoughts.

Truth time...I have absolutely no idea what rest look
s like. Does anyone else have this problem? I mean, I think I thought I knew what rest was...heading home from your job and not working. On Sunday afternoons I take a nap (or hibernate, as my wife likes to call it). I always assumed that was my rest for the week. For some reason, though, I'm beginning to think that's not what real rest looks like. Maybe I'm over-analyzing this one, but as I take stock of what my life typically looks like, I'm coming to realize that my times of "rest" always involve DOING something. For instance...currently my weekends are spent driving down to Tennessee to remodel a cabin for a friend. Leave Thursday afternoon, work all day Friday, half day Saturday, get back in time for work Saturday evening. Three hours one way. Now I LOVE this lake, and being there certainly has a calming effect on me. But am I resting?

Now for the bigger question...what are the spiritual consequences of me not understanding what rest is? Clearly there is a spiritual thing going on here, and I'm starting to tangle with it. Matthew 11: 28-29 says
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." I've got to marinate on this one for a while, because I know on the backside of this there are GOOD things. Thoughts are always appreciated.

PS: When I googled "rest" this came up. It's just too good not to include (feel free to insert liberal sarcasm throughout the description...)

"Portable Folding Foot Rest" - The portable folding foot rest folds up which makes it convenient to take with you. The portable foot rest helps to relieve back pain by giving you a place to rest your feet while allowing you to sit back in a chair or sofa. The portable foot rest measures 8"x4"x4" when it is folded out."por

Excellent question. I hope to let you know my thoughts on this soon. God is commanding me to rest - I wonder if I can really do it. It's so hard not to jump into something new. Krissy top
